Reawakening WAM 2/27/11

On 2/27/11 we had a WAM meeting at the People's Cafe. Shareese, Alissa, Stella, Mila and Marina were in attendance. We got caught up and shared what we've been working on and what we're excited about.

We talked about having a show at the Jelly Fish Art Gallery on 9th and Folsom. Juniper, their curator, said she would be happy to have a WAM show. She would like to see our work and then we can get a spot on the calendar.

Marina proposed the idea of a "Basement Show." There is a storage room in the basement of Marina's building that has been abandoned for years. It is filled with the treasures of Haight District dwellers that have come and gone. We decided to comb through the dusty boxes and find items that inspire us. The idea is that each artist will make pieces inspired by the basement relics. Our digging produced some real gems.

Our goal is to have the work complete by 5/1/11 and hopefully get a show in the late Summer or early Fall. Fun!

Meeting Notes 6/22: I heart SF hunt details

Norma, Stella, Alissa (hooray for new members), Mila and Marina met at Marina's house and hammered out the details for our WAM sponsored treasure hunt. The highlights include a completed Photo Release form for participants to sign so that we can publish their images, an official Hunt Guidelines document, a press release and a registration e-mail that includes all of these. There is an e-mail saved in the drafts folder of our gmail account that can be sent out to interested parties just as soon as we nail down the payment link. Below is a summary of the details.

My apologies: Norma took some amazing notes that I some how failed to save before shutting down my computer so here's my helter skelter version:

Treasure Hunt Rules:

Open registration

Ready, set, go date: July 16 12pm

Registration fee (no refunds): $5/ individual or $10/team

How to register: register by e-mail, return photo release and payment

Registration details: name, e-mail, phone

Release form, able to use images in wam publications, etc.

i ♥ SF! update!

Here's a quick update on WAM's last meeting, held last week. In attendance was Marina, Stella, Aurora and Norma. Aurora brought along her adorable new addition to her family who was an instant hit!

In order for us to move forward with the I ♥ SF Visual Treasure Hunt, we MUST secure a venue first. We are looking for a place to host our event for one night only. The date has been now updated to Saturday, July 31st. We've decided that having everyone return two weeks later might be a bit too much, therefore by having a sign up sheet at the party, we can get emails from all attendants. After judging, we can contact the winners and mail out the prizes (coffee table book.) This list will also allow us to contact the participants about where to purchase the coffee table book.
We also came up with a great idea to go out and participate in the treasure hunt ourselves, but ahead of time, so that we can then assemble a sample book to show at the party. This way, we an also join in the fun!

The website seems to be coming along and will hopefully be wrapped up by mid-June. We have secured an AD in inGEN Magazine for the visual treasure hunt, so we need to wrap up the final decisions (mainly venue,) quickly. inGEN goes to press on May 26th! The ad will direct them to the website.

We'll need a quick blurb if someone wants to take this upon themselves to write up quickly. A short description of the event for the ad and call for participants. Ad will include: title, date, payment(?) and where to register (our wam.now email.)

The meet up spot for July 31st in the morning will be at Union Square, by one of the hearts. Once a participant has registered, they will receive this information for meeting time and place. It will also be easier to accept the payment for buy-in at that time, in exchange for the list.

Other list items we came up with:

Finally, after the venue is secured, we need to finalize the treasure hunt list.

Marina and Norma met up with Crystal's at her lovely home for a super happy awesome productive meeting! With us we brought ideas for the i ♥ SF! visual treasure hunt and a list of things that need to be done in order to successfully pull this off. These are listed here in order of importance:

Wamminutes 4/6/10

Crystal, Stella, Mila (our youngest member) and Marina convened at Quetzal. We discussed our process for our recent self-portraits and our show at Boneflowers that was just taken down.

For our new project, we have decided to turn the lens outward towards the world around us. Marina suggested an "I heart SF" show for our summer project. The current running idea is to host a visual treasure hunt. WAM will compile a list of items such as "apple, public urination, golden gate bridge, etc." On the day of the hunt, teams will take photographs of the different items on the list. There's a good chance drinking will be involved. That night, everyone will reconvene to display their uploaded images using Marina's projector onto a huge screen/wall (location still to be determined). There will be ballots and winners will be chosen for each item on the list. The winners will be printed and framed and comprise our summer collection.

This is where our brainstorming went. We are open to new ideas, add ons or detractions from this idea, etc.

Our next meeting will be on 4/20/10 at Crystal's house. We will watch "The Cruise" and bring our ideas for the treasure hunt list and at least 2 suggestions for galleries where WAM may show this summer or in the future. I am especially interested in finding a new home for the Super Hero collection which I have plans to collect from Mission Comic and Arts this weekend.

Self Portrait: A Series of Reflections

The next WAM-riffic show is almost upon us!
We discussed using the Narcissus theme, based on the myth of the youth who falls in love with his own reflection.
Juniper's upcoming photoshoot will include flowers and mirrors.

Minerva finalized the show dates:
Wednesday, March 10: Hang the show any. We agreed to meet around 5:30 pm
Thursday, March 11: Opening 4 - 8 pm, Flannery till 6, Marina, Crystal
Thursday, March 25: Closing 4 - 8 pm, Flannery till 6, Stella, Juniper
Thursday, April 1: Take down anytime between 12 - 7pm (New show being hung on Tuesday the 6th, so our work needs to be down by then.)

Stella created a flyer for show which can be included with our advertising.

We're planning to decorate with Narcissus (white) flowers and mirrors.
Stella and Flannery will try to make some paper white flowers to add to the decor
Marina, Crystal will be going mirror hunting before the show. Thriftstores, Ross, and the big White Elephant Sale this weekend could be good mirror sources.

What are our goals for 2010?

Go Stella: She repurchased URL www.womensartmovement.org and is on the case. WAM will check in or she'll report back on website progress by 1/19/10.

Marina is on it. Flannery has all the leftover magnets for sale

• Fictitious Biz Account: Approx $30 + publishing fees ($25). Crystal volunteered to track down her contact at Oakland Tribune sales dept for maybe getting freebie. Crystal will do research.

• More Crafts in 2010
Our small, crafty items are usually the most sellable.

• Self Portrait show March at Boneflowers
Crystal shared the images from her photo shoot and everyone discussed their choice of media.
Marina is contacting Minerva for opening/closing specifics.
Collaborative work for this show? Perhaps we could create a collaborative window display. Something with mirrors to make interactive with passerbyers.

We used Mod Podge as a seal finish over printed images on ceramic tiles, as coasters and serving plates. On the craft horizon we see homemade scented candles and stash boxes! Happy crafting!

This show would be a chance for self reflection for each individual artist. More for fun and self expression, than profit. Could be one large self-portrait of each of us- let's check out the wall space next time we meet to see if this works. As collaboration, we could use elements of our portraits and do screen printed bags, printed compacts (see previous notes,) etc.

Dollhouse Monsters invade Polk Gulch

Group show explores the scary and sweet of pop-surrealism

(San Francisco, CA) Just in time for Halloween, the latest group show coordinated by the Women's Art Movement (W.A.M.) explores the scary and sweet sides of pop-surrealism. Ten artists working in a variety of media, from photography to ceramics, will have work on display.

Tedda Hughes Gallery Boutique, located in Polk Gulch at 1623 Polk (between Clay and Sacramento) hosts the "Dollhouse Monsters" opening party on Saturday, October 24, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

The participating artists of W.A.M. will be disguised in pre-Halloween costumes for the festivities, and encourage attendees to dress in costume as well. Everyone who stops by the gallery will be entered in a costume contest to win an i-Pod.

The show's artworks and products will be on display and for sale at Tedda Hughes for two weeks, Saturday, October 24 - Saturday, November 7.

A collective of Bay Area artists working in a variety of media, W.A.M strives to become a beacon of vibrant female art. W.A.M. offers members an organized support system — the people, resources, and motivation to inspire, direct and activate a shared creative vision. Another terribly efficient and productive meeting was thrown down at Quetzal Cafe last night. Here's some notes on what transpired:

Dollhouse Monsters prepare to attack Tedda Hughes Gallery

Big thanks to Stella for the Dollhouse Monsters show flier. Share with everyone you invite.
Stella reviewed the artist's contract that all participating members need to submit to Tedda
If you can't attend the hanging on Sunday, Oct 18, 5 - 7 p.m., make sure you hand off your works and hanging instructions to an attending member before then.
All participating artists need to attend the opening reception on Saturday, Oct 24, 7 - 10 p.m.
Artwork updates: Norma will be showing and shared drafts of her "crowvacado" pieces in progress. Flannery showed her work (almost done!) and magnet packaging.
Magnets will be sold for $2 each, $5 for 3, or $7 for 4.
Stella will be contacting Tedda regarding the following, lingering questions about the show:

• Double checking for approval of on our magnet sales
• Does she have any special hanging instructions?
• What tools/hardware does she supply?
• Will she provide the labels for the pieces?
• When would she like us to take down? (Sun. 11/15 would be 4 weeks)

We coordinated wine & appetizer duties as follows:

• Flannery - witches fingers (they're creepy!), 1 wine
• Stella - snacks! perhaps another creepy sweet, fruit, cheese
• Marina - 2 wine, 2 nonbooze
• Norma - 2 wine, 2 nonbooze
• All other participating artists are obligated to bring the equivalent of 1 wine and 1 nonbooze according to Tedda's contract. Anyone's welcome to bring munchies.

We coordinated publicity as follows:

• Indivual members will email the flier and personalized invitation to friends and fans
• Flannery will write a little press release for funcheap.
• Marina will post our event with laughing squid, SF plant trees
• Stella will post on Craigslist and send out Facebook invitation
• Norma will post with artkrush

What's the next step in becoming a nonprofit?

We need to obtain an EIN number, which is basically a social security number for biznesses. Stella will look into making this happen by October 27.
We then need to fill out a "10-23" form to become formal nonprofit (This costs like $300 so it was suggested that we throw a fundraiser.)

Hey Ladies,

How are you all? The meeting went well. We made some magnets to sell at our Dollhouse Monsters show. Ah yes, and we decided on the name Dollhouse Monsters.

Our super hero/ villain prints are up at the Mission Comic Store and Leef is having a grand opening on Saturday at 7pm. He has asked to sell our perfumes too so we will get those over to him.

Stella got word from Tedda and our opening reception will be on Saturday, October 24th. We will need to hang our stuff the week before. Tedda has another female artist that will be showing her work with us.

Norma's show is next Thursday 9/24 at Anu. Mark your calendars!

Marina, Minerva, Norma & Mewow met at Quetzal last night to discuss the progress on our body of WAM works for the Tedda Hughes gallery show. Here's the highlights of our wee meeting:

A new name for Cherry Pop?

Minerva suggested that the name Cherry Pop does not adequately convey the theme of all our assorted pieces, and that we should brainstorm on a new name once we see the complete collection.
We decided the works submitted and proposed all still fit under the "pop surrealism" label.
Most of this work could be said to...

...reference the dark side of sweet/cute
...examine the tension created by limitations, bodily imprisonment
...the conflict of superficial ideals with bodily realities
...others?

Costco Print Order Deadline • Thursday, Aug. 20

Flannery emailed Stella about emailing Tedda about picking her favs for the show so we can include those in the Costco print order.
Minerva recommended we use www.getdropbox.com for the transfer of large photos. (log in wam.now@gmail.com, password: wamnow)

Other show updates

Flannery pulled Amelia's images out of the Tedda selection folder since she still hasn't heard back from her.
Minerva's entering a selection of Little Monsters in the show. She has the prints at her shop and can show Tedda in person.
Somebody else will be showing at Tedda's during October... Stella, do you know anything about the art? Will it fit with our theme? Should we co-promote?

hello WAMs! here's my notes from last night's meeting at Quetzal. mucho gracias to Juniper for the deeeeliciousness.

What's next on the nonprofit front?

We now have a FREE account at Chase bank!
Marina and Stella volunteered to take a fieldtrip to city hall to obtain fictitious biz license and tax id number.

What's happening with our website?

For the immediate future, we talked about purchasing our agreed upon template for the ease of getting our stuff on the web in a timely fashion.
The longer range goal would be to find a local web designer to manifest our more complex site vision.

Yay for free publicity!

WAM is in demand!

Stella will follow up with her contact regarding a possible November show at a Mission coffee shop.
Leif wants superheroes to hang at the opening of his comic book store in the mission... whenever that is.
Minerva sez perhaps a March 2010 show at Boneflowers?
Keep an eye out for potential venues for our languishing Pinned Up prints.
Perhaps a collaboration with Bloom? "A celebration of music and art from a woman's prospective. 4th Thursdays @ Anu-SF, Hosted by Mahogany L. 43rd 6th Street @ Market"

JPGs for Costco print order due to Flannery by 8/20/09. (Remember, these need to be high-res (150 dpi minimum at print size) to look zee best. Apparently Costco now has poster-size enlargements available on-site, so we should be able to go bigger... like to fill those 16 x 20 frames. Costco sizes: 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 8x12, 11x14, 12x18 ($3), 8x8, 12x12, 16x20 ($9), 20x30($13?)

It'd sure be swell to have one place for all our stuff. Someday, maybe that will be the website. Until then, we have this blog... why not use it and have our exciting dialogue open for all the world to see?

What if we had a networking portion of our website that's kind of like myspace or facebook etc. where female artists could have profiles and check eachother out and make postings like looking for someone to illustrate my children's book or looking for women to model my fashions or looking for artists to fill my gallery.

Look we're bloggin! I just sent an e-mail to Rachel from Arkay Workshop. She's the one who has a new shop on 24th and Bryant and might be interested in hosting our next show. I sent her links to our super hero and pinned up series. Would anyone like to do a drop-by with me this weekend to follow up on my e-mail? The address of her shop is 2869 24th. Even if you're just in the neighborhood, take a look. It sounds like she has some amazing locally designed clothing, accessories and knick knacks.
